Field of interest; Epidemiology, prevention and treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, with depression as a centra theme . Our aim is to develop new interventions and clinical applications based on a better understanding of what goes wrong in depression, both on a psychological and a neurobiological level. My research is both in large patient cohorts such as the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), in population studies such as LIFELINES and TRAILS, but also in smaller clinical studies. Pathophysiological mechanisms of interest include neuroinflammation and chronobiology, in which we have a number of PhD trajectories. We are doing trials on Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields and will soon (2016) start an RCT using oral ketamine for Treatment Resistant Depression. As a clinician and a teacher I see patients with Treatment Resistant Depression in our Tertiairy Mood Disorders program.
